Zero Balancing
A gentle, hands-on approach to relaxation and body awareness
Zero Balancing (ZB) is a gentle hands-on approach developed within osteopathic practice. It uses precise touch and pressure, with an emphasis on the relationship between the body's structures and energy.
The aim is to encourage deep relaxation and a sense of ease. People often describe feeling deeply relaxed and refreshed following a session.
What happens during a Zero Balancing session?
A Zero Balancing session lasts up to 45 minutes and takes place with you fully clothed, lying comfortably on a treatment table.
It is a total-body approach, using gentle but firm and precise touch at different points around the body, particularly in relation to the bones and joints.
There is nothing you need to do or prepare for beforehand. Zero Balancing is non-diagnostic, so you don't need to have a particular problem or condition in order to have a session.
For some people, it provides an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life, quieten down and reconnect with how their body feels.
Who might enjoy Zero Balancing?
Zero Balancing may be particularly appealing if you:
- feel tense or wound up
- find it difficult to switch off and relax
- feel overstimulated by the pace of everyday life
- would value some quiet time away from everyday demands
- are interested in exploring a different approach to relaxation and body awareness
Everyone experiences Zero Balancing differently, but clients commonly describe a feeling of deep relaxation during or following a session.
Where does Zero Balancing come from?
Zero Balancing was developed in the 1970s by Fritz Frederick Smith, MD, a doctor of osteopathy and medicine and an acupuncturist.
Dr Smith's work brought together his understanding of Western anatomy and structural approaches with Eastern traditions and concepts around energy and awareness. This led to the development of Zero Balancing as a distinct system of hands-on work.
